Pier Paolo Pasolini. EVERYTHING IS SACRED
The seeing body

curated by Michele Di Monte

October 28, 2022 – February 12, 2023

The exhibition, set up in the new rooms on the ground floor of Palazzo Barberini, is part of the exhibition project coordinated and shared by the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, Azienda Speciale Palaexpo di Roma and MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, 5 March 1922 – Rome, 2 November
1975).

The choice of the title, Pier Paolo Pasolini. EVERYTHING IS SACRED, is inspired by a sentence of the wise centaur Chiron in the film Medea (1969), which evokes the mysterious sacredness of an archaic world, not yet corrupted by the consumerist and alienating conformism of modern bourgeois capitalism.

Conceived as a “montage”, the exhibition of the Gallerie Nazionali explores the theme of the sacred, the underlying motif of the whole project, and the crucial role of the artistic tradition in Pasolini’s cinema and visual imaginary, from medieval art to the Baroque Age, from the hieratic archaism of Giotto and his followers to the subversive realism of Caravaggio.
