The product of a joint venture between the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, this exhibition brings together for the very first time since the 19th century the frescoes devised by Annibale Carracci to decorate Spanish Banker Enriquez de Herrera’s family chapel in the church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli in piazza Navona in Rome.
Thanks also to recent restoration, it is now possible to engage in research, to extend our studies and to identify this cycle as one of the works crucial to any understanding or definition of Annibale Carracci’s style and of the talent of each and every one of his assistants.
The Sala Marmi, the Sala Ovale and the Sala Paesaggi on the first floor of the Palazzo host the frescoes, Annibale Caracci’s altarpiece from the church of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli and a selection of drawings enabling visitors to retrace the entire history of the Herrera Chapel, exceptionally reconstituted on this occasion.
