The sovereign image. Urbano VIII and the Barberini family

18 March 2023 - 30 July 2023

The Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica features in Palazzo Barberini the exhibition “The sovereign image. Urbano VIII and the Barberini family”, curated by Maurizia Cicconi, Flaminia Gennari Santori, Sebastian Schütze (March the 18th – July the 30th 2023).
Four hundreds years have passed since the election of Maffeo Barberini to papacy with the name of Urbano VIII: it’s the perfect anniversary to celebrate the cultural and political shape of the papacy that immensely influenced the XVIIth century arts, philosophy and science. The exhibition’s purpose is to show how the Barberini’s cultural strategy was focused on the political achievement.

The Barberini collection became smaller throughout the centuries; and now, thanks to the exhibition, many masterpieces from the most important museum all over the world, finally will come back to the original location.

More than 80 masterpieces from our permanent collection and from more than 40 museums and private collections will be on display.

The exhibition is composed by twelve sections and extends throughout the palace, from the ground floor to the most symbolic spaces of the first floor: the Pietro da Cortona hall, the marble room, the Throne room, the landscape room and so on.
